It’s Official: Tweets Are Now 280 Characters Long

The news is true

After a sneak preview and some testing last month, Twitter has officially expanded it’s character count to 280 characters. The change went live on November 8th, and will be originally available in few languages, including English.

In addition to more Tweeting, people who had more room to Tweet received more engagement (Likes, Retweets, Mentions), got more followers, and spent more time on Twitter. – Twitter Blog

Twitter has always limited tweets to 140 characters, though they did support changes throughout the years to allow adding photos and links without counting towards the character count, so people could share more. Twitter released that they hope this change helps people Tweet quicker and easier, by spending less time worrying about character limits.

Double the characters, double the fun is keeping you up to speed, and already support 280 character tweets from within our dashboard. What does that mean for you?

  • Say more with every Tweet!
  • Longer Recurring Tweets
  • Easier to post the same text across multiple networks
  • Easier to explain about your business
  • Spend less time editing Tweets

The debate has started on Twitter, as the Twittersphere seems to be torn between excitement and disappointment. Check out the hashtag #280Characters to read what people are saying and join the conversation.
